It is our understanding that the 'A' units were only produced as replacement cabs and never as a part of a production run, therefore inconsistencies can be expected. We are also aware that there have been fakes made of this unusual piece. This cab was reportedly obtained from a Midwest hobby store in the early 70's by the current owner for $15.00. Listed below are properties we have been able to identify about this 'A' unit: -- Louvered Top -- Collapsed dimple -- No inspection door handle -- Original MKT-Frisco decals -- Army green rear cab bracket -- Gray mold -- Single piece horn -- No grab bars -- Painted nose star much smaller than normal production (over another nose star) -- Flush side ladders -- Current red 'The Texas Special' is painted on top of the current white paint -- Underlying 'Built by LIONEL' is also a ghost image -- No evidence that number boards, headlight, horns, rear bracket or window shield have ever been tampered with, nor do they show signs of having been removed from another unit. -- Red paint is not as shiny as the 'B' unit -- White paint has the typcial 'dust' imbedded SEARS SET #9836 This is not a made-up or put-together set. It was awarded to a Sears employee as a prize for a store contest. The original owner opened and unboxed the compoments, but never operated any of the items. Her young son had a curious interest in the caboose and rolled it on the track, leaving minor wheel marks. All other items have 'Zero' run time including the prized 2347 Geep. Some boxes show signs of handling but can all be graded as 9's or better. The 12885-10 8/65 instruction sheet is present as well as all the other original paperwork. The set box has some residue from tape, either applied by the factory or the original Sears store as well as part of an original Sears label. There is no writing on the box, and it still has the original packing insert. This set box has been fitted with a hard plastic cover that has kept it from getting dusty or soiled over many years of expert care. I grade it as a 9 or better.
